Jose Mourinho had another dig at Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward after Manchester United opened the season with victory over Leicester.

Mourinho described Paul Pogba as ‘a monster’ after the unsettled Frenchman responded to being captain with a dominant performance in United’s 2-1 win.

But the United boss is still unhappy that Woodward did not deliver a new signing before the transfer window closed earlier this week, and believes a lack of say in the club’s business dealings means he should now be called a head coach rather than a manager.

‘I find myself in the beginning of the Premier League with the market closed in the situation I thought I was not going to be in,’ said Mourinho.

‘For us, it will be a difficult season because I had my plans for many months.

‘That’s football management. I think football is changing. Football managers should be called now more head coaches.

‘We have big coaching staffs and I think we are more the head coach than the manager. That is the way I think football is going.

‘We have to wait for end of November, beginning of December to understand how things are going and if we can fight for the title. Or you believe in the pundits and go with what they say.

‘We play against a team that invest more than us. They (Leicester) spent more money than us, so in the Premier League we must get used to teams with players of the same quality that we have.

Diogo Dalot (Porto, £17.4m)

‘Forget the name, the history, the shirt, every match is difficult.’

Mourinho decided to name Pogba as captain in the absence of Antonio Valencia as United try to convince the 25-year-old midfielder that his long-term future lies at Old Trafford.

Pogba, who has told United he wants to join Barcelona, scored the first goal from the penalty spot before Luke Shaw claimed his first senior goal in a 2-1 win.

‘Pogba was a monster,’ Mourinho said after United’s record £89million record signing started against Leicester despite just four days training since returning from winning the World Cup in Russia.

‘Paul was fantastic. His contribution was amazing. We thought a maximum 60 minutes but he managed 80.’

Pogba overruled Alexis Sanchez when United were awarded an early penalty despite the protestations of his teammate.

‘He is the first choice,’ added Mourinho. ‘The thinking is he is a very good penalty taker and likes the responsibility of it.

‘Of course, we have second or third choice in case he is not confident or for some reason doesn’t want to take it.

‘But he was ready and practised lots of penalties during the World Cup.’

Pogba confirmed that it was his decision to take the penalty ahead of Sanchez from the group nominated by Mourinho.

‘The manager puts names out, after that it is how we feel,’ he said. ‘I decided to take it. I was among the names as well. Maybe in the next game I can give to Alexis. It’s not a problem, it’s the win that is most important.’

The former Juventus player also indicated that he is ready to stay at United instead of pushing for a move to Spain by saying he wants to win the Premier League.

‘I’m quite young and I want to get better, progress and win more trophies,’ said Pogba.

‘I won’t be full with a World Cup. I didn’t win a Premier League, didn’t win a Champions League or European Championship.’
