Danny Cipriani arrived at a hotel in Bristol on Wednesday afternoon for his independent disciplinary hearing in front of the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

The Gloucester and England fly-half has already been charged by the RFU of ‘conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game’ and he could face a fine or ban should the complaint of his behavior be upheld.

Cipriani, who has been named in the Gloucester team for Thursday’s pre-season friendly against the Dragons, was last week fined £2,000 at Jersey Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to charges of common assault and resisting arrest following an incident that took place on the club’s pre-season tour.

The RFU panel will be the third investigation into his conduct in Jersey with the court proceedings last week followed up by an internal examination by Gloucester.

Barrister Gareth Graham, former referee Mike Curling and ex-Harlequins lock Olly Kohn will be the latest to decide Cipriani’s fate.

Gloucester took a supportive stance on their player and a meeting with the club’s hierarchy ended with a measured response. Cipriani was fined another £2,000 and ordered to spend 10 hours coaching local children.

A Gloucester spokesman said: ‘We are in agreement with the magistrate in Jersey that this was a minor incident.

‘While Danny is very apologetic, we do not believe he is guilty of bringing the game into disrepute and he will continue to get our full support. Danny has now faced disciplinary action from both the courts and his club.’

Both the club and the player feel he has been punished twice already and will be keen to avoid any further recriminations, particularly a suspension.

Cipriani will not want to fall out of favour with England coach Eddie Jones having impressed in South Africa.

A guilty verdict could see the 30-year-old’s stock with Jones fall which would undo all the hard work to force his way back into the fold.
