Final Rooney cap wasn’t my idea, admits England boss Gareth Southgate

Giving Wayne Rooney a final England cap wasn’t my idea, admits Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate

  • Wayne Rooney is set for a final farewell with England against USA on Thursday
  • Gareth Southgate defended the call to give England’s leading scorer a 120th cap
  • But the Three Lions boss admitted: ‘I don’t know how the discussions worked’

Sami Mokbel for the Daily Mail

‘I’ve not spoken to Wayne since he was an ambassador for the Under 17 finals (in May).

‘We had a good discussion there but we haven’t directly discussed this, because there was no need for that.

‘There’s no particular agenda to me not speaking to him, let’s make that clear.

‘I don’t think Wayne has been involved in all those discussions and I don’t need to be involved in all those discussions, frankly.

‘I always want to be consulted on the football and if I’m happy from that perspective then it’s an opportunity for us to honour a player we hugely respect.’
