Jose Mourinho said on Friday morning that Lukaku is in contention to return for United against Manchester City on Sunday but the Belgian forward has missed the last two United games through injury.

On a broader level, he has endured a poor run of form and has not scored for United since the 2-1 victory over Watford in September.

Lukaku endured a heavy summer workload as Belgium finished third at the World Cup and the striker then also cut his holiday short to help United’s cause at the start of the Premier League campaign.

Yet the striker is now believed to fear that the exertions have impacted his form and he had privately considered holding discussions over missing the upcoming internationals even before picking up his injury on the eve of last weekend’s win at Bournemouth.

Instead, he will now head to Brussels for Belgium’s training camp early next week, where Lukaku, Martinez and the medical staff will decide the best course of action.
