But, according to Calciomercato, the situation could be different in the January transfer window with Inter reducing their asking price from £48m to £31m.

They also report that a part-exchange with United’s France forward Anthony Martial could also be a possibility though Martial is presently United’s most in-form player.

Perisic, 29, has scored twice and set up two more goals in 16 appearances for Inter this season.

With Jose Mourinho a long-standing admirer of Perisic, who helped Croatia reach the World Cup final over the summer, United have tested the waters with Inter over the last couple of years.

United were only prepared to go as high as £45m during the summer for an addition to a forward line that is already well-stocked.

The Old Trafford club already have the likes of Martial, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez to support forward Romelu Lukaku.

But much of their firepower has been off target this season as they sit eighth in the Premier League standings, a distant 12 points behind leaders Manchester City.
