Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are getting ready to go head-to-head in ‘The Match’ on Friday at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas.

Woods and Mickelson squared up in light-hearted fashion – true pre-boxing fight style – on Tuesday as they previewed the one-off event.

And ahead of the eagerly anticipated showdown, the once big American rivals have admitted they will make substantial side bets during the £7million ($9m) winner-takes-all match.

Mickelson fired the first jibe as he wagered £78,000 that he makes birdie at the first hole, a bet which Woods insisted he doubled.

The side bets will go to good causes – the money will come out of their own pockets and benefit various charitable causes,

14-time major winner Woods and five-time major winner Mickelson will wear microphones for the contest, as will their caddies, to give viewers a unique insight into the big-money match.

And Mickelson is hopeful that the match will be received well by golf fans worldwide.

‘Hopefully, it will be received well by the viewers at home,’ Mickelson said at a press conference in Las Vegas.

‘It’s a glimpse into the future of sports. We’ll have live odds on screen so the viewers can place wagers, and they’ll be able to hear all of the banter.

‘It’s a rare insight into our sport and I think people will want more of this in the future. If people don’t like it, then it’s probably going to be one-and done, but I think it will go down well.

‘This event is designed to be a unique golfing experience for the viewer, with the insight, the drone coverage, the live on-screen gambling and the live microphones.’

Meanwhile, Woods – who is relishing his return to the golf course after his tough time at the Ryder Cup – added that the event will showcase the sport in a ‘different light’.

Woods said: ‘It’s very different for golf. We’ll be able to showcase our sport in a different light, with the different technologies we will be using. It’s exciting for me and Phil and for viewers.’
