Nico Hulkenberg was trapped in his upturned Renault as flames lapped his car in a nerve-wracking start to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Hulkenberg was sent hurtling through the air on the first lap after colliding with Haas’s Romain Grosjean.

Once his car had become nestled in the hoardings, he came over the radio to say: ‘Get me out of here, there is fire, there is fire. I’m OK but I’m hanging here like a cow. Get me out of this car.’

A plume of smoke burst out at the rear of his car but his team assured him: ‘They’re coming, they’re coming,’ as marshals scurried to the scene.

The flames went out before the fire took hold.

Hulkenberg was fortunate to walk away from the incident unscathed with the FIA declaring him ‘fit’ after he walked himself to the medical centre for checks.

It was a scary episode for Hulkenberg after he locked wheels with Grosjean at the right-hander Turn Nine.

The cameras cut to anxious faces in the paddock. Singer Sam Smith, watching with Spice Girl Geri Horner, was among those worried until Hulkenberg stepped out of the car some three minutes after the accident.

Neither driver was punished, the collision rightly being deemed a racing incident.
