He survived admirably enough in Russia, when he guided England to the World Cup semi-finals at his first attempt, but now Gareth Southgate is calling upon a whole new set of survival skills by going on a mission with Bear Grylls.

The England manager has become the latest celebrity figure to accompany the famous explorer into the wilderness, to be pushed to the limits.

After being coolness personified at the World Cup, Grylls has looked to see how Southgate can cope under a different kind of pressure.

‘Southgate took the ‘ultimate challenge’ on ‘some of the country’s most rugged, unspoilt moorlands’, broadcasters ITV have said.

The episode, which is to be an hour in duration, is set to hit television screens in the coming months.

England gave a little teaser of what is to come on Monday, after taking to the national team’s official Instagram page to share an image of Southgate and Grylls.

The Three Lions boss could be seen wrapped up against the elements and, whether intentional or not, wore a waterproof jacket in England colours of red and blue.

In the build up to the official television screening of the show, Grylls has talked up the mental strength of Southgate and paid tribute to his character.

‘Gareth’s shown incredible strength in his life becoming England manager and our mission together certainly challenged him on so many levels,’ Grylls said.

‘The wild always rewards commitment and courage, and Gareth has both of these qualities in spades.’

Southgate said he had accepted the challenge after going with the England squad to the Royal Marines Commando Training Centre, for a weekend of military training before the World Cup.

‘Bear’s mission has not disappointed by presenting me with some great physical and mental challenges over the past few days,’ said Southgate.

The Three Lions headed to the base in order to strengthen bonds within the ranks and work on team unity while also being pushed to their thresholds.

Southgate joins a long list of important personnel to have worked closely with Grylls, including Anthony Joshua, Barack Obama, Kate Winslet and Roger Federer.
