And although it wasn’t the dream return he was hoping for — he came off the bench and missed a penalty in Monaco’s 2-0 defeat — the 32-year-old has not dismissed the notion of calling Madrid home once again.

‘We never know in the future,’ he said. Obviously, Atletico Madrid will always be in my heart.

‘I don’t know, maybe once my contract at Monaco finished, I don’t know what will happen. I am always supporting Atletico Madrid.

‘Mixed feelings, a great welcome of the fans, lovely as usual. But we have to turn the page because we have a final at home next Saturday [against Montpellier].’

Falcao was honoured by Atletico before Wednesday’s match for his successful time at the club and received a memorial plaque.

‘I am always grateful and happy,’ he said of the gift. ‘Not just for the trophies or goals, but the people were really thankful for the effort and the engagement.

‘That’s something I identify with. They are the values of this club. I am so thankful and I will keep this souvenir forever.’

Falcao won the Copa del Rey, Europa League and UEFA Super Cup during his time at the Spanish club.
