However, Benitez does not yet know if owner Mike Ashley will sign off on the deal, or if takeover talks could complicate the purchase of new players.

Almiron is at the very top of the manager’s wishlist for January and he sees him playing in a withdrawn forward’s role, a position which has been a problem for Newcastle in recent seasons.

During the 2018 MLS season Almiron scored 12 goals and provided 13 assists in 32 appearances.

Having commenced his senior career at Cerro Porteno, Almiron joined Lanus before signing for Atlanta United in 2016.
